Art and Design - Player Character Body Types

As you may already know, Super Street Skate is a game where the player becomes more and more powerful as they progress throughout the game. We took many influences from all over the place with regards to art style, from things like comic books, skater games and culture, cartoons and even music.

What we really wanted to drive home with our character design is that you are in fact a superpowered human, and stylistically you should look and feel like one too while playing. The models shown later are placeholder for now, and are simply 3D concepts for the body structure of the player character.

Something else we'd been looking at was the art style for the Gorillaz - skinny characters, block colours and eyes with little detail to them, so Matthew concepted up a few characters, and gave one in particular to me for a reference.
As you can see, he's got that ramshackle costume on like you might find someone wearing in Batman: Gotham City Imposters, but he's also got some of those major features you'd find in Gorillaz artwork.

The above are what I came up with, to fit the criteria.
On the left is the model with proportions similar to those used for the first image. They are much like something you would find in a comic book, or a cartoon featuring superheroes.
On the right is something more like the original character concepts created by Matt, with less exaggerated proportions than those of the "Heroic" body type.
In the middle is somewhat of a midpoint between the two. The shoulders aren't as broad as the "Heroic" body, nor are the calves, forearms or the chest, but they are still noticeably more so than the "Athletic" body.

At the moment, we haven't yet settled on the body type we want the male player to have, so if anyone has suggestions, leave a comment!
And finally, here's a concept for some of our more brutish characters, and what body type they might have:
